The Art of Rug Sizing – Why Most People Get It Wrong

If I could fix one thing about how people buy rugs, it would be sizing. Almost every rug I see in a finished room – whether on Instagram, in a magazine spread, or in a friend's flat – is a size too small. It's the single most common mistake, and it quietly undermines a room that's otherwise beautifully put together.

A correctly sized rug grounds the furniture. A small one floats in the middle of the floor like a postage stamp, making the whole room feel temporary. This is why we built a free rug size calculator and a full complete rug size guide – not as a marketing exercise, but because the industry has under-served customers on this for decades.

    The Living Room Rule

In a living room, the rug should be wide enough that at least the front legs of every sofa and armchair sit on it. Ideally, all four legs. That single decision changes the proportion of the room more than any other furnishing choice.

We've written more on this in our living room rug placement guide and answered the question should a rug be bigger than the sofa? The short answer is yes, almost always. Our Luxury Living Room Rugs are sized with this in mind.

For larger open-plan spaces, look at our guide to large rugs in 250×350 and 300×400. At those dimensions, a rug stops being an accessory and becomes architecture.

    The Bedroom Rule

In a bedroom, the rug should extend beyond the sides of the bed by at least 60cm – ideally more. The point of a bedroom rug is the moment your feet land on it in the morning. If you have to lean over to find it, the size is wrong.

Our guide to the best rug size for a double bed in the UK and our piece on what size rug for a king bed walk through specific dimensions. For placement detail, our bedroom rug placement guide covers the three layouts that actually work.

    The Office and Study Rule

A home office rug is the most overlooked piece in the house. Done well, it absorbs noise, defines the work zone, and softens the inevitable hard edges of desks and shelving. Done badly, it catches a chair wheel and frustrates you every time you sit down.

Our Private Office Collection is curated for exactly this. We favour flat-weave and low-pile constructions here, which roll smoothly under a chair and don't compress unevenly under desk legs. If you need an unusual dimension, every design can be made to bespoke size – just get in touch and we'll quote within 24 hours.

    A Note on Custom Sizing

Because every rug we sell is hand-knotted to order, custom sizing isn't an upsell – it's the default. If a standard size doesn't fit your room, ask for what does. There is no good reason to compromise on dimensions when the craft itself is bespoke.
