How to Layer Rugs Like an Interior Designer

Layering rugs is one of the most impactful interior design techniques — and one of the easiest to get wrong. Here's how the professionals do it.

    Why Layer Rugs?

Rug layering adds dimension, warmth, and visual complexity to a room. It's a technique that's been used in design for centuries — from traditional Moroccan interiors to contemporary Scandinavian living rooms. The key benefit is that it allows you to introduce texture and pattern without committing to a single, expensive large rug.

Step 1: Choose Your Base Rug

Start with a large, neutral rug as your foundation. Natural fibre rugs like jute, sisal, or a flat-weave wool work perfectly as base layers. The base rug defines the overall footprint and should follow standard sizing guidelines for your room.

Step 2: Select a Feature Rug

Layer a smaller, patterned or textured rug on top. This is your statement piece — choose something with visual personality. A bold geometric design or a richly textured piece from our designer rug collection makes an excellent feature layer.

    Step 3: Play with Proportions

The top rug should be at least 60 cm smaller than the base rug on all sides. Classic combinations include:

    Living Room

170×240 cm on 250×350 cm base

    Bedroom

120×180 cm on 200×300 cm base

    Step 4: Angle for Interest

Place the top rug at a slight angle (15–30°) to the base for a relaxed, intentional look. This works particularly well in living rooms and prevents the layered look from feeling too rigid.

Step 5: Mix Textures, Not Patterns

The key to successful layering is contrast in texture rather than competing patterns. Pair a smooth flat-weave base with a soft, high-pile top layer. Explore our texture collection to find complementary pairings.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    ✗ Two patterned rugs

✓ Keep the base neutral; let the top layer be the star.

    ✗ Similar pile heights

✓ Create contrast — flat-weave base, textured top.

✗ Rugs too similar in size

✓ Ensure 60 cm+ border of base rug showing on all sides.

    ✗ Ignoring colour harmony

✓ Pull one accent colour from the top rug into the room's palette.
